Abstract

|
A case of congenital lumbar hernia in a child (3 yr. old Korean girl) treated surgically at Maryknoll Hospital.
The mass was the size of a fetal head, soft, oval shaped and occupied the entire portion of the rt. lumbar area.
A congenital lumbar hernia was suspected, even though the incidence of this lesion is very rare.
At operation, we found the mass to be composed of small and large intestine contained in the large hernia sac. When the superior and inferior lumbar spaces were opened, it was found that the intestine protruded through this space.
We corrected the deficit using the modified method of Warbasse, and the surgery was completed.
The wound healed well and there was no bulging mass at the examination of the patient 2 months post. operative. The general condition of the child is excellent at the present time.
